Mark Lawrence is one of my very favorite authors. From any other author this series would be a high point.It certainly is completely different from the prince of thorns or red queen series. The world is interesting, the plot is interesting, but compared to the two former series the protagonists appear to me more one dimensional. In addition, the action is exciting but the protagonists, a group of 12 yr old girls, seem to be so incredibly invincible that I found myself falling out of the story going “really?”Something I did not expect from Lawrence.Disappointed is a strong word, as I said from anyone else I would be satisfied but his earlier works are just so much more compelling. I have invested my time in two of this series, but seriously doubt I will continue. I really liked the first book in this series. This second installment is wearing a bit thin. While the first book created a lot of new interesting characters and did a great job of world-building in a good adventure format, this one is delving into the characters more. Unfortunately this is also showing Lawrence's weaknesses. Too many snarling bad-guys that can't get past snarling. Too many introspective pages of our heroines that don't give us much in the way of depth or complexity. And just a tiny bit too much of the "what a coincidence" events.I will finish this one but I'm no longer impatiently awaiting the next.
